Can ransomware spread through a VPN?

Good day to everyone. Long story short my son has been staying with me for a while and I noticed he installed something called a VPN on my computer. Three days ago I got an SMS message from a number I've never seen before asking me to click on a link. I suspect it is something malicious and the two are linked. Is it possible that the two are linked and I'm getting these messages from this VPN thing?
