Can a VPN bypass my ISP and prevent bandwidth throttling?

Asked 2 years ago

My internet bandwidth keeps getting throttled, and it's so, aarrgh, annoying. Multiple people on it love to stream all sorts of things, and I can't get any work done. Will getting a VPN - that works on multiple devices - for everyone stop the bandwidth from being throttled?

A VPN won't entirely prevent bandwidth throttling, but it will definitely help in minimizing it. When you use a VPN, the content your viewing will be automatically hidden from your ISP, so it's highly likely that the throttling will be lowered. You can even use a VPN if your ISP has artificially slowed down the network speed, as the content won't be flowing directly from your computer to the server (the VPN will act as a proxy).
