Can using a VPN prevent a WannaCry ransomware attack?

Asked 2 years ago

Hi there. I had heard about the WannaCry ransomware attack a few years ago, and so I was shocked to hear from a friend that these attacks are still a threat today. I therefore have updated my computer's software and it has been patched in order to prevent such an attack. However, if I wanted additional protection against this type of ransomware attack, would a VPN be useful? TYIA.

A WannaCry ransomware attack typically targets individuals using an unprotected public network. A VPN prevents this threat from affecting your business's network or employees' computers. When you access the internet with a VPN, you connect directly to a server instead of going through an intermediary service like an ISP or corporate firewall. These services are vulnerable to attacks like this (and many others). Therefore, restricting data access to these insecure elements can help enhance overall security.
