Are phones or computers more prone to ransomware attacks?

Hello everyone, I purchased a new computer and got gifted a new phone for Christmas. I don't really want to pay for an extra antivirus package as its too expensive. Does anyone know if phones or computers are more prone to ransomware or is there no difference? I'm thinking of using a VPN on one platform to help with security but I'm not sure if that will work either?
